Looking for a quick escape into nature with a bit of a thrill? Spout Force is your answer! This little beauty of a waterfall, nestled in Whinlatter Forest, offers a splash of adventure, a cool dip, and some seriously stunning views. It’s relatively easy to reach, but before you dash off, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Timing is Everything
Spout Force is becoming a bit of a hot spot (for good reason—it's gorgeous!), mainly because it’s close to parking. If you're not a fan of crowds, I’d recommend picking a weekday or visiting outside of peak summer and weekends to enjoy it in peace.
The Walk: Easy But Not Without a Few Challenges
Even though it’s only about half a mile (or less) from the parking spots, the walk isn’t a smooth stroll. The path is uneven and undulating, so if your knees aren’t your best friends, proper walking footwear is an absolute must. The trail is lined with ferns, so be mindful of ticks—they love shady, moist spots, and their season runs from March to October.
Pack Smart: It’s Chillier Than You Think
Even though the walk is short, don’t underestimate the need for the right gear. The water at Spout Force comes straight off the fells, and it’s freezing! Water shoes are a must—the rocks underfoot are slippery and tricky to navigate. And here’s where the Changing Tube becomes your best friend. Not only does it offer you quick, easy, and discreet changes, but it also keeps you warm when you’re drying off after that bracing dip. Plus, it takes up hardly any space in your backpack, so you won’t even notice it’s there—until you need it! Trust me, you’ll be glad you packed it.
Parking Options
I parked at the Spout Force car park, which you’ll find first if you're coming from Lorton (///switch.eruptions.hobby). Just a heads-up, parking here means you’ll have to tackle a steep hill at the start and end of your adventure. There aren’t any facilities here, so take care of business before you set off—or be ready for a quick nature wee if necessary. The best part? Parking here is free.
If you’re lucky enough to snag a spot, you can also park at ///chromatic.tracks.stupidly. This location cuts out the hill altogether, but spaces fill up fast, especially on busy days.
My Journey to Spout Force
With my Warmcor Après Swim socks on and boots laced up, I was ready to roll—or so I thought. I managed a few false starts, but after a bit of confusion (and a passive-aggressive interaction with a local), I finally found the correct path. Shout out to the two dog-walking legends who kindly redirected me!
Back near my car, I discovered a sneaky little path tucked under the trees, leading to a gate—this was where the real fun began. Off I went, through the gate, following the path around a field to a stile. If you’ve got a dog with you, be sure to keep them on a lead—this is sheep country, and by September, those woolly ladies are likely pregnant.
Over the stile and down the hill I went! The steps are uneven, weathered, and lined with ferns (again, watch out for ticks). The view across the valley is worth every step—it’s stunning. At the bottom, a charming little bridge greeted me. Once over, I joined the path that leads from the second parking spot (///chromatic.tracks.stupidly). At this point, you’re halfway there!
Closing in on the Waterfall
As the path starts to incline again, you’ll spot a wooden viewing platform—but don’t head up there just yet. Instead, look for the beech tree and make your way down to the stream. Tread carefully here, as the ground can be a bit uneven, but this is where the adventure really kicks in.
When I couldn’t go any further in my walking shoes, it was time for a quick costume change. Out came the trusty Changing Tube from my backpack, and in a flash, I was suited up in my swimming costume, water shoes on, and ready to take the plunge. Let me tell you—this was the coldest water I’d felt all summer, and it was glorious, especially after a sweaty walk in 20°C sunshine.
The Dip: Cold, Refreshing, and Unforgettable
Safety Note: I did this solo, but I made sure a family member knew my plan and when to expect me back—always a good idea when venturing out alone. The ground near the waterfall is uneven, and the current is strong, so I kept to the safer areas, away from the heavy flows. But getting up close to Spout Force was exhilarating—the roar of the water, the icy spray on my face—it made me feel alive! And as if on cue, a cheeky little Dipper bird flew by to say hello. Nature at its finest!
After a bracing dip by the waterfall, I found a deeper pool closer to my “base camp” where I could lounge in the cool, crisp water while basking in the warm sun. Bliss!
Wrapping Up My Adventure
Once I was done soaking in the beauty (and cold), I dried off with my hand towel and used the Changing Tube again to quickly swap back into my dry clothes. Even with the sunshine, the water was seriously cold, so I didn’t want to risk any chills. A quick spot of lunch by the stream was the perfect end to the adventure—nothing like dining with a babbling brook as your background music.
For the journey back, I skipped the ferns and uneven steps, opting for the gentle climb of the road to return to the car park. Much easier on the legs!
In the end, Spout Force delivered everything I was looking for in a mini-adventure—beautiful scenery, a refreshing dip, and a sense of peace that only nature can provide. Whether you're after a short escape or just a chance to marvel at a hidden waterfall, this spot has it all.
A perfect little adventure for the soul!
