Stand-Up Paddle Boarding with Liverpool SUP Co.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding with Liverpool SUP Co.

In this Wild Swimming Journal entry, I have a chat with Jayne, the owner and head coach of Liverpool SUP Co. I first met Jayne when I was working in Manchester with the RSPB. It wasn’t long before her infectious enthusiasm for stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) got me on the water.

During our interview, Jayne shares her deep-rooted love for water, the evolution of her paddle boarding business, and invaluable safety tips for newcomers. Whether you're an aspiring paddler or a seasoned enthusiast, this post will offer insights into the vibrant paddle boarding community and how to safely enjoy this exhilarating activity.

The Beginnings of a Passion

Childhood Memories and the Ocean's Call

Jayne's passion for water began at a young age. Growing up in Liverpool, a city with a rich maritime history, she was naturally drawn to the sea. Her earliest memories involve frequent trips to the beach with her parents, which she fondly recalls as foundational experiences that sparked her lifelong fascination with the ocean. One vivid memory stands out: losing a ball to the sea at Southport Beach. This incident, driven by an offshore wind, left a lasting impression on young Jayne. She vividly remembers her father’s ambiguous response when asked where the ball had gone, which only fuelled her curiosity about the vast and mysterious ocean. This curiosity eventually grew into a passion for exploring and understanding the water, leading to her present-day involvement in paddle boarding.

Transforming a Hobby into a Business

The Genesis of Liverpool SUP Co

Jayne’s transition from a water enthusiast to a business owner was a natural progression. After spending years honing her skills and understanding the intricacies of various water sports, she founded Liverpool SUP Co in 2018. Initially, paddle boarding was a personal hobby, but Jayne saw an opportunity to share her passion with others and to create a community.

The Rise of Water-Based Businesses

Jayne observes that more people are now turning their water-based hobbies into businesses. Activities like paddle boarding, cold-water dipping, and other aquatic sports are becoming more than just pastimes; they are avenues for revenue and personal fulfilment. The community around these activities is growing, with a significant support system for small businesses. This environment has allowed Jayne to cultivate a thriving community of paddle boarding enthusiasts in Liverpool and beyond.

The Allure of Paddle Boarding

A Unique Water Experience

Jayne eloquently describes paddle boarding as an activity that offers a unique sense of freedom and exhilaration. When on the water, she feels liberated and at peace, pushing against the wind and challenging herself. The act of paddling not only provides physical exercise but also a mental escape, allowing her to disconnect from daily stresses and connect with nature.

The Contrast of Cold-Water Dipping

In addition to paddle boarding, Jayne enjoys cold-water dipping, as it offers a different but equally compelling experience. Dunking her head under cold water brings about a primal, calming sensation that forces her to focus on the present moment. Helping her to clear her mind and provides a profound sense of tranquillity, contrasting with the dynamic and freeing nature of paddle boarding.

Embracing Safety and Awareness

The Importance of Lessons and Qualifications

Safety is paramount in any water activity. Jayne emphasizes the importance of taking lessons from qualified coaches. When she started Liverpool SUP Co, there were only a few organizations offering certifications for paddle boarding instructors. Today, British Canoeing, renamed Paddle UK, has become the official governing body for paddle sports in the UK. Jayne herself is certified with the Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI), one of the premier organizations in the field.

Essential Safety Tips

Jayne offers several crucial safety tips for paddle boarding:

  1. Take a Lesson: A professional lesson can provide invaluable insights that are not easily found online. A qualified coach can answer questions and teach proper techniques to ensure safety and enjoyment.
  2. Wear a Leash and Buoyancy Aid: These items are essential for staying connected to the board and ensuring buoyancy in case of a fall.
  3. Check Your Equipment: Regularly inspect your board and paddle for any signs of wear and tear. Ensure they are in good condition before heading out.
  4. Be Mindful of Wind Conditions: Avoid paddling in winds over 12 knots. Always start against the wind to make the return journey easier if you get tired.
  5. Know Your Limits: Understand your fitness levels and capabilities. Avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits, especially in challenging conditions.

Environmental Responsibility

Involvement with Surfers Against Sewage

Jayne is actively involved with Surfers Against Sewage, serving as the regional representative for Liverpool. This organisation focuses on combating water pollution and advocating for cleaner seas. Jayne highlights the importance of taking responsibility for our waterways and the impact of pollution on water users.

The State of Our Waters

Despite the growing awareness, water pollution remains a significant issue. Jayne describes the current state of the waters as "full of shit," emphasising the urgent need for action. Surfers Against Sewage organises paddle-out protests to raise awareness and push for better environmental practices from water companies. These protests aim to highlight the unacceptable levels of pollution and demand accountability.

Political Advocacy and Environmental Policies

With the snap election not far away, Jayne encourages everyone to support political candidates and parties that prioritise environmental protection. She believes that caring about the environment and advocating for sustainable practices should be key considerations when choosing whom to vote for. Reading manifestos and supporting candidates who resonate with these values can drive meaningful change.
